Ember's Background

Ember, née Caydence Romilda, was born 5 years before the start of the Ogre War to an Elven mother and human father. Her father, Duke Bellehache, was the governor of Aldera, located southeast of the now ruined city of Tarapentia. Aldera was known to have an unusually high Elven population due to its proximity to the Elwood, a forest home to many elves. Having heard the rumors of Ogres on the move and witnessing the destruction of Tarapentia at the start of the Ogre War, Duke Bellehache rallied his troops under the protection of Erathis and fought for their city. After enduring 3 months of siege at the hands of the Ogres, Duke Austin of Tarapentia came out of hiding with the remainder of his troops and fought bravely with the Alderans to defend the city walls. After 4 days of battle, Aldera stood victorious.

Caydence grew up having the cushion of nobility but understanding the turmoil of war. She watched as scores of men left to fight but never returned home. Those who did return came back broken and disillusioned. Her father’s dear friend Duke Austin returned periodically with reports of the war. She became fascinated by his stories of holy men and warriors and the divine powers they possessed. In her dreams she often saw images of herself fighting alongside her countrymen, a holy symbol emblazoned upon her armor.

When she was 16 her childhood friend Marius received his notice to go to the frontline. Frustrated with her comfortable life she was confident that her destiny was revealing itself in her recurring dreams. She sought knowledge of the divine from those who had dedicated their lives to the True Gods. Having heard of his daughter’s inquiries, Duke Bellehache was displeased and pleaded with Caydence to stay in the city—enough people were dying at the hands of the Ogres. However, this was impossible. Caydence left her family, her life, everything she knew, to become a paladin—a crusader of Bahamut.

After completing her training and divine rituals, the young paladin left to find her friend. Upon reaching the front line of the battle, she and Marius fought valiantly alongside each other and their allies. On one particularly stormy day, Caydence looked up to see her friend lying on the ground, bleeding profusely. She ran to aid him with her powers of healing but it was already too late—her dearest friend, Marius Ember, had died. After that day, she was more dedicated than ever to Bahamut’s cause of restoring justice and peace. Following the end of the war, she had no desire to return to her life of nobility. She took her friend’s surname to hide her identity and secured a position on a boat bound for the New Land.
